Jeet Kune Do: Bruce Lee’s Martial Art Style

January 24th, 2012

Although everybody knows Bruce Lee as a great Kung Fu actor, he also developed his own style of martial art named Jeet Kune Do. This martial art is now taught worldwide, and has elements from older martial arts with several new techniques and strategies derived from sport fencing. In this article, we’re going to be taking a look at what Jeet Kune Do is about and how it is different from other martial arts.

Bruce Lee become famous as an actor, but he was well developed as a martial artist. He grew up learning many different martial art styles but he was particularly keen on Wing Chun Kung Fu. He put together the important elements of the several martial arts he mastered and developed Jeet Kune Do or JKD. Bruce Lee needed to come up with a martial art form that was non-traditional and that every individual could tailor to his own needs. Jeet Kune Do has had an influence on contemporary martial arts and even Western boxing and fencing. Lee’s objective was to make Jeet Kune Do into a type of martial art that allowed the individual to develop their own style.

Although Jeet Kune Do was created by Bruce Lee to be a non-classical martial art, many of its moves are rooted in a much older style called Wing Chun. It’s a style of Kung Fu that’s still extensively taught these days. Win Chun was created in China centuries ago by a Shaolin nun called Ng Mui. The techniques of Wing Chun are meant to be effective for individuals who need to battle against stronger or larger adversaries. Mastering Wing Chun is a lot faster than other forms of Kung Fu. One of the best known training techniques of Wing Chun is to utilize a wooden dummy, where strikes to many parts of the body are practiced. Bruce Lee mastered Wing Chun and took that as an inspiration for his Jeet Kune Do.

With mixed martial arts being so well liked, many ponder if Jeet Kune Do still is relevant. Since his demise, Bruce Lee has had a significant impact on mixed martial arts and what Jeet Kune Do offered can be seen today. Bruce Lee desired to take the best tactics in all martial arts and make one great system which is not that much different from mixed martial arts. The fact is, Dana White, the president of the UFC, credits Bruce Lee with being the true father of mma. So it can be said that Jeet Kune Do is the original type of mixed martial arts.

Jeet Kune Do has become very common in many parts of the world and it is quite unique and exciting to participate in. Bruce Lee had a powerful philosophy of making it possible for the individual to develop their potential to their fullest and Jeet Kune Do is the expression of that. To learn more about Jeet Kune Do, you can find books written by Bruce Lee or find a qualified instructor to help you.

Use Agility Training to get Better at Sports

Agility ladder 1 by paulcornish

When seeking to improve your agility, it makes sense to seek out routines that will assist you in your goals. Better agility allows you to perform better on the field or court. This is due to improved reaction to outside stimuli and compact, fluid motion in that response.

Agility training offers a number of other benefits. Those with optimal agility also experience fewer injuries than do those with weaker agility skills. This is due simply to the improved form and more precise, trained muscle movements that come from comprehensive agility training.

Ladder agility drills are one popular method of increasing agility. Leg strength is key to improved agility, so incorporate exercises to increase leg strength. Combined with ladder agility drills, you’ll find greater results on the field. You can purchase an affordable agility ladder, or create one of your own with rope, tape, sticks, or other makeshift items you have around to form a ladder pattern on the ground.

Agility and foot work are extremely important parts of playing football, however, these are also areas which are over looked when it comes to off season and preseason work outs and conditioning. When referring to agility and foot work one is usually addressing the ability of a player to change direction, move his feet, and move the feet in one direction and then another. Agility and foot work is also called quick feet and essentially involves the ability to start and stop quickly as needed on the field.

There are many different drills which may be employed when attempting to work with football players on their agility. Perhaps one of the oldest and most well known is the tire drill. Thousands and thousands of players have taken their turn navigating two alternating rows of tires. The goal is to concentrate on picking the feet up and putting them down in the center of the tire. Another drill which is certainly similar is the ropes or ladder drill. With the ropes drill, a series of ropes is suspended above the ground forming two rows of squares. In the same manner as the tire drill, the football player high knees through the ropes concentrating on placing the foot down and picking it up again quickly. The ladder drill consists of a nylon double or single row ladder which lies on the ground. The player moves through the ladder course alternating his feet inside the squares. The players can also be instructed to place one foot inside, then the other, followed by one out and then two out and is performed with a high knee motion.

Another variation on the theme, as it were, is to have a player stand beside a yard line. On a signal, the player high knees one foot over the line then the other. The motion is repeated for five to seven yards crisscrossing the line with lots of repetition. Many programs have found success with plyometric boxes which require an athlete to lift one or both legs at a time to a variety of heights.

Cone work is another good tool for working on agility and foot work. Cones may be set up as two, three or four depending on the drill. Using two cones, simply have the player move back and forth between cones paying attention to foot work, cuts, and the use of the body. Additional cones may be added to vary the pattern being run or to add circling around the cones to the drill.

Working in the off season to increase the agility of football players will pay huge dividends in the fall of the year. Receivers will come off the line of scrimmage harder and run better routes and defensive backs will make better cuts and be more productive on the defensive side of the ball. All players will benefit from added agility and foot work.

Here’s one drill to try: In the five count drill – you will perform the most complex pattern. Start by hopping to your right foot, outside the first square to the right. Next, you’ll step with your left foot into the square and follow then with your right foot in the same square. Then step into the second square with your left foot, and follow immediately with your right. Once you reach the third square, you’ll simply reverse your actions in the first square, stepping with your left foot outside, right inside, and follow with the left foot. Continue through the squares.

Happy with Verizon

May 29th, 2010

My current cell phone carrier is Verizon. I am happy with them as my chosen carrier. I don’t get too many dropped calls compared to my previous carrier. I like the phone I was able to get. It is purple. I only had to pay $100 dollars for the phone. I text a lot so I have an unlimited texting plan. I would not have chosen Verison as my carrier if they did not offer unlimited texting. So far I have not had any concerns with their products, services, of customer service. They have reasonable prices so I will continue to be a customer.

Six of Seven

May 25th, 2010

This week I went to work six out of seven days. I am a nurse. I gave medication to my patients and administered treatments. It was a very busy week. One of my patients died this week. I comforted her family as best as I could. Other than work I was at home. I cleaned my apartment and cooked dinner almost every night. I watched television with my husband. My in-laws came to visit last night. We played a game and ate pizza together. I went to church on Sunday evening. On Tuesday I went to the bank and put gas in my car.

Blogging is an excellent past time

May 21st, 2010

I love to blog because it provides a way to instantly tell the world about anything you want to share.  Blogging is also a great stress reducer, where you can write about the things that bother you, get them off your chest – and read other peoples comments who feel the same way as you do or have other points of view.  The alternative points of view is also an excellent reason to blog.  People are always ready and willing to give you their opinion online, and you can easily see the different views from tons of different people.

Three people I would love to have lunch with…

May 17th, 2010

If I could choose three people to have lunch with, my choices would be…

The President of the United States – Sure I’d love to do lunch with Obama, but really it would be an honor to dine with any US President.  I would love to ask about their daily lives and how they cope with the stress of running a country.

Robin Williams – I adore his positive attitude and unique sense of humor.  In fact, I am not sure how much I would be eating – I suspect I would be laughing most of the time!

The Dali Lama – I would love to have lunch with such a wise and positive individual who has had such a positive impact on the lives of countless people and nations.

Eggplant and Pepsi…

May 13th, 2010

Sounds like a weird combination I know, but this is my favorite food and drink.  I love eggplant, its nutritious and you can really do so much with it.  My favorite Italian restaurant makes an excellent eggplant spaghetti meal that is to die for. The one down side to eggplant is that it can be very difficult to cook correctly.  If cooked wrong, it will turn out bitter and mushy.  To correctly cook it you need to be sure to salt and dry it first to draw out all the bitterness and keep the firmness in tact.

Why I love my small family

May 9th, 2010

I have a small family, and when I was growing up I often wondered if I was missing out.  Many of my friends families were very large and I always thought that must add extra fun and excitement to family get togethers.  As I grew older, I found that my small family – myself my mom and my brother were perfect and I would never ask for anything more.  Having a small family really allows you to be there whenever anyone needs you, to check up on each other often and keep in touch easier.  It is much easier to call two people and tell them about your week than it is to call 4!

Why my wardrobe consists of 50% black clothing.

May 6th, 2010

I bet you read that and automatically assume I am into the goth scene or an emo kid, right? Wrong! I highly suggest adding more black to your wardrobe because it fits almost any occasion.  Black also matches just about any other color clothing you may have – so it is easier to get dressed quickly without having to decide what matches best with your favorite shirt.  Another reason why I love black is because it is slimming, and when you feel slimmed down and confident, you will naturally look better and appeal to others. So next time you are out shopping, if you are stuck deciding between the colored shirt and the black one – choose the black! You will be grateful you did when you discover the more options you have when wearing it.

Why I use Yahoo Email

May 3rd, 2010

I love Yahoo email, they allow you to choose from various extensions when applying, making it easier to get the address you want.  Yahoo mail also works directly with Yahoo messenger, so you can see whenever your friends are online – right from your inbox! Plus, having a Yahoo email address allows you to access their other great services like their online radio, join groups and more.  I feel that the services gained from using Yahoo far outweigh the benefits of Gmail or other popular service providers. I have used Gmail in the past, and recently I (and others) have began to notice that they will require you to verify your account via cell phone to set up or continue your service.  What an invasion of privacy! Google is just getting too big for its britches, go with someone like Yahoo where you will get more and keep your private information private.
